Celebrate Communion

Duration:

  • 20 Minutes

What You’ll need:

  • Bread

  • Juice (preferably grape juice or red wine, if you are so inclined)

  • Bible

  • Candles

  • Cell phone

Preface

Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is simply obeying Jesus when he told his disciples “do this in remembrance of me. (1. Corinthians 11:24).  This is a time to remember the terrible price that had to be paid to secure our forgiveness because of the righteous demands of a Holy God.  The cup reminds us of this.  It’s also a time to be reminded of the great love that Jesus has for us.  The bread reminds us of this.

We encourage you to celebrate communion in the evening, using only candle light.  This will help to create the atmosphere of the Upper Room where Jesus was with his disciples.  If you choose, you can also use a low table and lay around it on the floor, resting on your left side with your head and shoulders towards the table.  This is how Jesus and his disciples would have eaten this meal.

One last thought:  if you are celebrating as a family (and are comfortable with this) consider using a common cup and one piece of bread.  Pass the bread from one person to the next and as you do so, simply say “The body of Christ” to them.  Do the same with the cup and simply say “The blood of Christ” when you pass the cup.

Experience

Suggested order for a small group or family (if you are alone, take time to reflect on each of the steps):

  • Read John 19:16-30 — Ask each person to identify one thing from the passage that moves them deeply.

  • Read Isaiah 6:3 and Hebrews 9:22 — Discuss why the shedding of blood is necessary for the forgiveness of sin.

  • Read 1. Corinthians 11:27-29 — Take time to reflect on sins that need to be confessed to God, relationships that need to be reconciled (if you are celebrating communion as a family, this could be a time to talk about and forgive any ongoing issues in the family).

  • Pray together, thanking Jesus for his death on the cross.

  • Pass the bread to one another.

  • Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 — After reading this, eat the bread. Pause for a moment, then say “Amen”.

  • Pass out the cups or, if you are going to use a common cup, place it in front of the one reading scriptures.

  • Read 1 Corinthians 11:25-26.

  • Drink together or pass the cup from person to person.

  • Pause for a moment and then say, “Amen.”

  • Sing a song such as “Jesus Paid It All” (you can find the words or words and music on the Internet) in closing.

Word of God

Duration:

  • 20 Minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • Bible

  • Large piece of paper

  • Pen or pencil

  • Markers

Experience

Pick one of the following passages of scripture. Consider praying beforehand to ask God which one He wants you to read.

  • Psalm 136:1-26 (consider reading this scripture out loud)

  • Psalm 139:1-24

  • Isaiah 6:1-8

  • Isaiah 40:21-31

  • Ephesians 1:3-14

  • Colossians 1:15-20

  • Revelation 4:1-11

While you read, ask yourself the following questions. After you finish, write down the answers to those questions on a sheet of paper.

  • What does this teach me about God?

  • What is God telling me to do?

  • What am I going to do?

Praying for our communities

During the following prayer time, consider playing worship music softly or lighting a candle as a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit.  If you would choose to do so, light some incense, which was a symbol of continuing prayer in the Bible. Consider fasting for an entire day when you choose to pray for these items. Or, consider fasting for one meal as you pray for them. Fasting in the Bible is often associated with intercession, which is praying on behalf of others.

Duration:

  • 5-10 Minutes

Experience:

Take time to pray for the community you live in. Follow this guideline:

  • Thank God for the good things that you see in your community.

  • Confess those things in your community that do not please God.

  • Ask God to give elected officials wisdom, humility, and a commitment to do what is right.

  • Ask God to bless the schools in your community.

  • Thank God for police, firefighters, first responders and ask God to protect them.

  • Ask God to protect and guide medical workers.

  • Ask God to bless the business community.

  • Ask God to draw unsaved neighbors and loved ones to himself.

  • Ask God to reveal himself to people in the community who do not know him - we would love to see candles at Cornerstone celebrating those who put their trust in Christ.

Duration

  • 10 Minutes

What You’ll Need

  • Cell phone/timer

  • Notebook

  • Pen or pencil

Preface

Read Psalm 46:10 out loud

Experience

Take your cell phone or timer and set it for 10 minutes.  Start the timer.  Ask God to speak to you and tell you the specific things that he wants you to know.  As thoughts come to your mind, simply write them down.  Don’t look at the timer.  Simply listen to God.

After the timer rings, take some time to look at what you have written down.  Ask these questions:

  • Does any of it apply to a situation you are dealing with?

  • Is there a promise here from God?

  • Is there something that needs to be corrected in your life?

  • Is it biblical?

Trust that God will speak to you during this time.  Thank him for what he told you and tell him what you are going to do moving forward.

 Family Prayer Jar

  • Markers

Experience

Find a jar and fill it with various expressions of prayer. Examples would be:

  • Thank God for your brothers and sisters.

  • Praise God for something he has done for you.

  • Pray and ask God to help your favorite teacher be a good teacher.

  • Ask God to help a friend know Christ.
